Learning outcomes: As a result of the module studying students will know: • the physical principles of transmission of optical signals over fiber waveguide; • the basic types and constructions of fiber-optic cables; • the principles of operation of active and passive components of fiber-optic communication links; • the classification of modern fiber-optic communication links; • the structural schemes of fiber-optic transmission systems; • the methods of installation of fiber-optic communication lines; • the basics of technical maintenance of fiber-optic communication lines; and will be able to explore: • the characteristics of components of fiber-optic communication lines.

Summary of the subject: General structure and basic components of fiber-optic transmission systems. Active and passive fiber-optic components of communication links. Optical light sources and detectors for the fiber-optic transmission systems. Classification of fiber-optic data transmission systems. Methods for increasing the capacity of data transmission systems. Technologies of wavelength-division-multiplexing. Coherent fiber-optic transmission systems. Digital technologies in fiber-optic transmission systems. Optical access networks. Fundamentals of designing of fiber-optic communication links. Cabling and exploitation of fiber optic communication links.
Assessment methods and criteria: • written reports on laboratory works, oral examination, written test (30%) • final control (70% control measure, test): written-oral form (70%)
