Learning outcomes: • Know the basic knowledge of fundamental sciences, to the extent necessary for learning of general professional disciplines. • Know the basic knowledge of natural sciences and engineeeering, needed for learning of professionally oriented disciplines. • Know the implementing basics of chemistry of natural, pharmaceutical, toxemia-carcinogenic and other biologically active substances. structure and properties of inorganic, organic and bioorganic compounds, and methods of their qualitative and quantitative analysis in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries • Know the structure, morphology, physiology, biochemistry and genetics of biological objects and the possibilities of experimental research in microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology and so on. • Know the fundamentals of the structure and functioning of microorganisms, plant and animal cell and their components.
Required prior and related subjects: Prerequisites: Biology of cells, Organic chemistry, Anatomy, physiology and diagnosis of a man Co-requisites: General Microbiology and Virology, Genetics, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Fundamentals of enzymology and immobilization, Chemistry of natural bioactive compounds.
Summary of the subject: The chemical composition and structure of cell walls. The cell membranes. The structure of amino acids. Proteins, structure of proteins. Classification of proteins. Classification of lipids. Fatty acids. The functions of lipids. Classification of carbohydrates. The biological function of carbohydrates. Nucleosides, nucleotides and nucleic acids. The structure of nucleic acids. Classification and nomenclature of enzymes. The specificity of enzymes. Regulation of enzymes action. Fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins, their role in living organisms. Hormones of humans and animals.
Assessment methods and criteria: • Written reports on laboratory works, two individual tasks – 30 points; • Summary control - 70 points ( control, exam): written-oral form.
